It's who; you Know...

It was a year ago today that I passed my animation test for Cartoon Network...

Yesterday, without knowing the significance of the date, I visited the studios with fellow artist Charlie Owens who works for CNN (Turner) already but wants to get in at Cartoon Network... I'd seen his work several months ago at the Highlander as was extremely impressed...
we met after I found Charlie on MySpace... and, following a brief correspondence, he asked if CN needed a graphic designer... I told him I wasn't sure, but that we should just go down there and introduce him to some of the people I work with... a few of them are already familiar with his art from shows around town...

I was going to call "V" on Monday and forewarn her of our visit, but she called me first, requesting my services for the next few months(!)... when I told "V" about Charlie, she mentioned that the department had recently lost 2 graphic designers and that he should bring a portfolio...

We met in the courtyard of the Techwood building around 2...
Charlie left his portfolio with "V", and I proceeded to give him the full tour...

We stopped by all the animator's offices... Jai told me that there was going to be a lot of work for me in the near future if I don't have anything else to do... and Joe to us that one of the artists on Birdman is hosting sculpting 'classes' every Tuesday night in an atrium above the Birdcage...

I think I'll join the sculpting class next week...
I've been wanting to make a maquette of Smudge for awhile now in order to settle on a look for the wild hare... plus it will give me some time to hang out with like-minded artists and bounce ideas around...

speaking of bouncing, my mind is all over the place right now... I'm not sure why...

Hopefully Mr. Owens will get a job... he seems like a really cool guy....

Oh and, it's safe to discuss HP and the Half-Blood Prince with me now...
I finished it this afternoon... I could've finished last night, but wanted to save it.
I'm actually considering reading it again this week...
(btw: [info]kungfoogirl Thanks again for giving me that book for my birthday! I was near tears when you surprised me!)

I'm in awe of JKR's storytelling ability.... still going around in circles trying to pick apart every last word... and I've Never done that with a book! At least not with other people... I've done it with maps, and blueprints....but never a story (unless it's my own)...
Perhaps it's because I have other people close at hand who are willing to discuss it at length with me... (ie. [info]kungfoogirl & [info]totallysirius as well as people on my friends list)... and we've been getting into some serious debates over the plot and characters...

since I've been sorting through all my old books, I've come across a few that I want to read again because of the HP series... namely, one of my all time favorites The Once and Future King by T.H. White and the lesser known book by the same author, The Book of Merlin which finishes the tale before it started (with Merlin's childhood)...

I cried almost as hard in this one, as when I did when Sirius died (he was my favorite). What a horrible way to end it though >_< its going to be atleast a year, possibly two before we see how this concludes, and im tearing out my hair already...

shushing for the sake of others

No worries. I finished it two days ago.

So what did you think?

Re: shushing for the sake of others

wow.
I can't stop talking about it here in IHOB...
which isn't really a problem except that I'm alone for most of the day!

I still marvel at how some authors can weave a tale so skillfully... if I meet a person who negatively claims that this is a children's series, I'm going get up in their face and ask what "adult literature" have they been reading which could even possibly come close to the substance of HP while continuing to entrance so many millions of minds... and finally to please share this mature knowledge with me...

Re: shushing for the sake of others

It's true. The only reason I can imagine anyone would dislike HP is that they are trying to be different. I know I was doing that until the Prisoner of Azkaban. Than I was like, "Holy shit, this stuff is really good!"

Re: shushing for the sake of others

I refrained from reading them originally because SO many people were doing I figured there'd be no worrying that it was looked into... Not so much trying to be different, I was just trying to find less traveled paths (ie. I was reading A Series of Unfortunate Events at the time)...

my friend [info]dustyskinandall points out that HP is children's LITERATURE, which is different from calling it a children's book...

Re: shushing for the sake of others

Yeah, HP is excellent for most any age, the only thing separating it from "adult" lit is some adult themes (as in sex, etc). Opinions against it seem to come from people who've never cracked the book open... or did it with their mind closed.

Now as for the latest book, it's got to be the closest to a cliffhanger JKR has done. It's going to be a long wait till #7. And I'm still in shock over the last 50 pages or so. And I can't decide about Snape's allegiance, other than thinking he's got to be the most unhappy person in the books.

Re: shushing for the sake of others

"...people who've never cracked the book open... or did it with their mind closed."

Well said...

and it's definitely going to be a long while before #7 arrives...
[info]kungfoogirl and I have been getting into long winded discussions regarding Snape... I think we mutually agree that his part in this is none too clear, and that there's a great chance he's no villain...
which shows JKR's mastery of the character...
I'm looking at the big scene where Snape's expression is described as being etched with "revulsion and hatred" ...even that would fit with his innocence if Snape had made an Unbreakable Vow with Dumbledor, just as Harry promised to do exactly as Dumbledor asked, no matter what was asked...

I think you're right, Snape must be the most unhappy character in the story...

oh, and we think Malfoy may be a vampire.

Re: shushing for the sake of others

oh, and we think Malfoy may be a vampire.

Now I need my book. Can JKR's vampires stand daylight? I can't remember if that one at the dinner party took place after dark. I am failing in my Potter knowledge.

You're right that Snape could go either way, as both betrayal or honoring Dumbledore's wishes, no matter how terrible. It also sets Snape's place at Voldmort's side, in the end, getting him close enough to help, should he choose to. Either for or against Harry.

I've a feeling Snape's going to get killed in the next one.

Or not. That would be equally cruel to him, and JKR hasn't pulled any punches she's sent Snape's way.

Re: shushing for the sake of others

well [info]kungfoogirl and I have been talking, and originally thought that Malfoy might have been bitten by Fenrir as part of Voldemort's orders... but that doesn't seem to fit with Malfoy's prejudices...
then we thought, vampire... not sure why... and not saying that he's been completely converted... in fact, just reading the suggestion now it looks absurd... but...somethings up.
I can't find anything in regards to how vampires operate in JKR's universe, they may be a species and not a transformed human at all...

something doesn't sit right that Malfoy could frighten Borgin with the mark of a Death Eater as Harry believes... I think Borgin would be quite used to seeing such things and worse...

Hm... baring a mistep of overemphasis by JKR, maybe it's a relic of some sort? Borgin knows his objects, and can appreciate the bad things they do more than most. Probably understands them more than people. Malfoy might've been given something he doesn't fully appreciate how dangerous it is.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who didn't want to read HP in one night. I wanted to enjoy it as much as possible and take my time. Of course, that means I finished it yesterday. Heh. I can only read so slow.

I can't believe it, but I'm actually considering reading it a second time...
However, if I do that, then I may as well start the series from the begining...
